Simon Kinberg says “Apocalypse” is sequel to “First Class,” not “Days of Future Past”

I imagine a day when it will be hard, if not actually impossible, for a new fan to keep track of the plot twists and the evolution of the characters in a movie franchise. Take for instance “X-Men” which, with the upcoming installment, “Days of Future Past,” brings together the Mutants in the old franchise and those in the rebooted one, which are actually younger versions of these.

So, while “Days of Future Past” is not even out yet, because of how complicated it sounds (and is), fans are already wondering what will happen in the threequel, which has already been announced and is called “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

Simon Kinberg, who is penning the script for “Apocalypse,” told HitFix over the weekend at WonderCon that this third installment wouldn’t be a sequel to “Days of Future Past” but of “First Class.”

In other words, don’t expect Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen to reprise their roles, but expect James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender to do so. However, the events in the second installment will definitely have a huge impact on those in the third.

“It would take place roughly between the past of ‘Days of Future Past’ and when ‘X-Men’ first started,” Kinberg said.

Before we get too much ahead of ourselves, we have “Days of Future Past” to look forward to. The film, boasting an A-list cast that also includes Peter Dinklage, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Ellen Page, will be out on May 23.
