I cannot believe this! The e-mail borne Storm just started infecting web pages. And what can I say? Its new feature popped up in style after it infected a US Republican Party site. The webpage got hacked and it had been
spreading a form of Storm that would attack any vulnerable machines that visit the site.
It is not so important that some site got hacked, nor that it spreads a virus - this happens all the time. Not even the fact that it is a Trojan and that we are talking about a political website is as important as this new feature that the virus has. The fact that now it can spread itself via websites is mind blowing. It had already been a serious threat, since it formed a botnet of millions of computers.
It appeared at the beginning of the year, then it started escalading, being the top threat in August, now it's started infecting sites and who knows where it's going to get before the end of the year? Maybe it'll start infecting humans too… just joking, but this threat IS serious. The party's site is just one that we know of, but who knows how many more are there in the same situation? In any case, it is now safe to surf there, as the malicious code has been removed.
In case you have been living under a rock for the past week, Storm has formed the largest botnet around. Of course, this helps hackers get a lot of money - they send a lot of spam with this network of mailer-zombies, and of course, the spam isn't just the type that will get your PC infected, but also, part of the botnet has been "rented" to other malicious users. So, basically, they sell huge spamming capabilities to spammers.
