Gaudy and over the top: not all attendees were winners

The Costume Institute Benefit was held last night in New York and everyone who’s anyone, and who had the money for the ticket, came out for the red carpet ceremony. The MET Gala is the Oscars of the fashion industry, so pressure was high on all guests to deliver their best, most memorable showing.

Not all celebrities passed the test. Some took too many risks and fell in the trap they themselves had set, but at least they got credit for trying, like Solange and Sarah Jessica Parker. Others, like Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Kris Jenner, were simply out of synch with the event itself.

Justin, Miley and Kris tried but failed

You can see their choices for an outfit in the gallery below. Perhaps the “saddest” fail comes from Miley Cyrus, who, a couple of years ago, when the theme of the MET Gala was PUNK, was deemed one of the best dressed celebrities.

However, without a doubt, the biggest fail of the evening belongs to Kris Jenner, who went so far out there she forgot the way to come back in.

Justin Bieber also gets a memorable mention, for wearing that gaudy Balmain jacket with huge golden dragons embroidered on it. As you probably noticed, he’s rocking a new haircut, having ditched the longer, unkempt ‘do after many weeks of Fedora-wearing. He posed with his sunglasses on the red carpet, because of course.

On the bright side, he gets credit for the gorgeous shirt and for pulling his pants up for once.

Miley wore a metallic grey, studded Alexander Wang dress with studs and huge side cut-outs that elongated her slender figure even more and made her appear almost scarily skinny. She too was rocking new hair, having dyed her blonde a bluish shade.

Despite her obvious attempt to shock (doubled by her telling reporters on the red carpet that she was not, in fact, wearing underwear), Miley’s overall appearance seemed exhausted - not in the sense that she was tired, but in that she was tiring.

Shock tactics can only take you so far.

The crown of worst dressed of the evening went to Kris Jenner, who was the very embodiment of tacky in a Balmain red gown, which she overaccessorized with giant chandelier earrings, a solid gold belt and gold-pointed shoes.

To cap it all off, she was wearing so much makeup she seemed to have dipped herself in the stuff before heading out. Kris is usually over the top on red carpets, but this time she seemed bent on beating herself at her own game.

More is not always better

These 3 examples are ideal to illustrate that old saying about how, sometimes, less is more. Indeed, the MET Gala is the perfect opportunity to overdo it, to go for exaggerated, outlandish pieces, but if they’re not put together right, they can end in disaster.

Chances are not one of these 3 stars has a stylist, and it was obvious last night, when they brought their own interpretation to the night’s theme, “China: Through the Looking Glass.”

In all 3 cases, it was something gaudy and cheap, and not flattering in the least. The worst part of it is that all 3 could probably do so much better: we know for a fact that Miley can.
