Vivo X5 Max is one of the sleekest devices ever

Right on schedule, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo rolled out the X5 Max smartphone today, which is touted as being the world’s slimmest.

These days, the title of the sleekest handset in the bunch bounces back and forth with total ease. Chinese OEMs especially have acquired a taste for ultra-skinny smartphones, as is the case of the Oppo R5, which is only 4.85 mm / 0.19 inches thick.

Say hello to the real Vivo X5 Max

However, the Vivo X5 Max takes things even further, by boasting a profile of just 4.75 mm / 0.18 inches, so it takes the title of world’s thinnest smartphone. For now, because who knows which company will take the title next week.

Anyway, today we focus on the newly launched Vivo X5 Max. The smartphone inherits its sleek look from its main board, which is only 1.7mm thick / 0.06 inches and 3.98mm / 0.15 inches chassis (as seen at Gizmochina).

As for specs, we knew most of them for quite some time, but in case you missed our earlier coverage, here they are.

The Vivo X5 Max arrives with a 5.5-inch 1080p super AMOLED display and bundles an octa-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor clocked at 1.7GHz and fitted with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB).

In the photography department, we find a 13MP camera taking advantage of a Sony IMX214 sensor plus and a 5MP webcam up in front.

On the fun side of things, the Vivo X5 Max packs a YAMAHA YSS-205X chip that brings along a karaoke function. The smartphone also has Hi-Fi and runs the company’s own Funtouch 2.0 OS which is based on Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat. Yes, sorry folks, no Android 5.0 Lollipop here, for now at least.

The handset will go on sale in China starting December 22 and will be up for grabs for approximately $485 / €392.

A mini version of the Vivo X5 Max is also coming

In related news, according to Chinese website TENAA, the world’s slimmest smartphone will also have a mini version.

The handset has already leaked with a 5-inch display and presumably the same SoC. But there’s a catch to the whole situation, the Vivo X5F will measure 143.3 x 71.1 x 6.3 mm / 5.6 x 2.7 x 0.24 inches, which means it will be 1.55mm / 0.06 inches thicker than the Vivo X5 Max, which is also taller and wider.

So if you had to choose, would you go for a smartphone with a slimmer profile but a larger display or one with a more compact one that comes with a bulkier profile and probably a cheaper price tag?
