Shortly after being crowned the world's oldest cat by the folks in charge of the Guinness Book of World Records, a feline by the name Poppy passed away in its home in Bournemouth, England.

According to Gawker, Poppy was born back in 1990, which means that, at the time of its death, it was 24 years old. To put things into perspective, it need be said that, in human years, its age was about 114.

Talking to the press, the cat's owners explained that, not at all surprisingly, Poppy's demise was brought about by poor health. Thus, the feline had trouble with its back legs and was also battling an infection.

“She had a bad week last week. She was on antibiotics on Wednesday because of a water infection and her back legs just seemed to let her down. She wasn't herself at all,” said owner Jacqui West.

Poppy's death might have been a long time coming, but the cat's owners say that, when it finally happened, they could not help but feel bad about it. As Jacqui West put it, “We knew she was old, but it's still very upsetting.”

“It's great she managed to get the world record beforehand, it's almost like she was purposely hanging in there because the process took months,” Poppy's owner added.
