Mineralogy experts might think of diamonds as no more and no less than carbon allotropes, but ordinary folks tend to view them as the some sort of philosopher's stone.

Hence the fact that they are ready and willing to cough up a lot of money to get their hands on one such rock.

HuffPost tells us that, this coming October, the world's largest round blue diamond is to be auctioned off in Hong Kong by multinational corporation Sotheby's.

The 7.59 carat rock, dubbed “The Premier Blue,” is expected to fetch a whopping $19 million (€14.21 million).

This estimate is based on the fact that the diamond is fairly big, brilliantly cut and internally flawless.

Should the rock sell for this much money, it would set a new world record. The current record for Fancy Vivid blue diamonds is held by a 6.01 carat rock that sold for $1,686,505 (€1,262,070) per carat back in 2011.
