If human society is to improve on its ecological footprint, people must quit driving cars that release tons of harmful chemical compounds into the atmosphere and switch to more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

The Netherlands seems to be fully aware of this truth, hence its decision to build the world's largest network of EV fast-charging stations.

The network is expected to be up and running by the end of 2015 at the latest, Tree Hugger reports.

It will charge vehicles in roughly 15-30 minutes. What's more, some of the power it uses will be provided by solar panels.

When work on this project is completed, no EV owner will ever find themselves more than 50 kilometers (roughly 31 miles) away from a charging station.

High officials hope that these measures will convince more of the country's residents to embrace a greener lifestyle and purchase an EV.
