Volunteers in Texas set a new Guinness World Record with the biggest gingerbread house

The Guinness World Record for the world's biggest gingerbread house was set by a group of volunteers from Bryant, Texas with a treat containing almost one tone of butter, 7,200 eggs and thousands of pounds of other ingredients.

The 22-foot (6.7 meters) house is big enough to easily fit a family of five and some occasional guests and was built exactly like a normal home. The project was meant to raise money for St. Joseph Health System, and in just a week, it raised almost $150,000 (€109,000) from visitors.

The volunteers built a delightful tourist attraction perfect for the holiday season and decorated with 22,304 pieces of candy. “I think what impresses me most is the community spirit around the record attempt. People came together for this remarkable cause and really worked hard at it,” Michael Menchaha, one of the workers says, according to Daily Mail.

In order for the charity purpose to be met, the tourists have a small fee for visiting the amazing house, $2 (€1.46) for children and $3 (€2.19) for adults that get to visit the gingerbread house until the middle of December. The heat and humidity of Texas don't make the best conditions for a gingerbread construction, so the locals are trying to keep it for as long as they can.

Bill Horton, the general manager of the Traditions Club who built the wonderful establishment, came up with the idea after the club wanted a way to raise funds in order to build a trauma center for their health facility. The best way to do that was to take advantage of the holiday season when people are known to be more generous than usual.

They didn't want to be just a plain Christmas charity event to raise funds so they decided to break the world's biggest gingerbread house record and make their cause known to the world. The mouth-watering house covered in gingerbread and icing may resemble the evil character's house from Hansel and Gretel, but it was built with a good purpose.
