Although even the Blu-ray optical format is yet to reach the worldwide success enjoyed by its predecessor, the DVD, that's not stopping manufacturers from already implementing and outing its successor, the BDXL (or Blu-ray XL), the first optical drives that actually work with these ultra high-capacity optical discs being outed by Japanese company Buffalo.

As you might have noticed, we're talking about two different drives here, namely an internal one (model BRXL-6FBS-BK) that packs a SATA interface, and an external one (model BRXL-6U2) that connects to a PC via an USB 2.0 port.

Of course, what makes these optical drives so interesting is their capacity to tap into the huge storage potential provided by the next-gen Blu-ray disc drives (or BDXLs, if you prefer the acronym), namely up to 128GB per disc for the 4-layer BDXL version and 100GB per disc for its 3-layer counterpart.

The speeds enabled by these drives sort of match the very large capacities they'll have to deal with (they're not lighting-fast just yet, though), since we're talking about 4x speeds for the BDXL discs, up to 6x for BD-R (Double Layer and single layer) discs, and 2x for BD-RE discs.

Of course, the new optical drives from Buffalo are backwards compatible down to CD-R/RW level, speeds for these early-generation discs being a lot faster, naturally.

Curiously enough, these things are pretty large, since the BRXL-6U2 measures 50 x 160 x 220mm (excluding protrusions) and weighs a cool 1.2 kilos, while the BRXL-6FBS-BK measures 148 x 42.3 x 175 mm and weighs roughly 750 grams.

Unfortunately, for the time being, Buffalo has refrained from providing any kind of significant information regarding either the pricing of their brand-new Blu-ray XL optical drives, or the moment when the first units will be available for purchase.

However, given the fact that the first BDXL discs should make their way onto the market in the near future, we're guessing that Buffalo won't wait too long before outing their new products, probably in time for the holidays.
