Fixstars has announced a SSD with an impressive capacity

One can never have enough storage on their machine, and that’s why we have hard drives, cloud storage and what not.

Most laptops and PCs can now accommodate traditional HDDs with impressive storage space that can offer as much as 10TB capacity. But those who would rather use SSDs over HDDs are more limited in their options.

SSDs are yet to become mainstream, and on top of that, they are a lot more expensive. However, the industry is pushing towards SSD usage, and as it turns out, soon we will actually be getting the first one to ship out with 6TB on board.

Fixstarts' new behemoth SSD ships in July

Japanese manufacturer Fixstars has just announced a 2.5” SSD with a memory capacity of 6TB. The manufacturer says its SSD is the unit with the largest capacity from the 2.5” SSD pool. For the time being, pricing details for the 6TB SSD haven't been made available.

The company will also be offering 1000M and 3000M models, which will be using 19nm flash memory, a 6Gbps interface and will offer 1TB and 3TB of storage, respectively. We can tell you that pricing for the 1TB model has been set at $820 / €732.

So as you can see, we can expect the 6TB SSD to be quite expensive. Since there’s a growing demand for large memory SSDs in the datacenter ecosystem, Fixstars has shifted its focus to that market.

The 6000M SSD model is probably the one that will be attracting a lot of attention. It uses 15nm flash memory to offer 6TB of storage. Read speeds are expected to be of 540MB/s, while write speeds should reach 520MB/s.

Even if SSDs continue to be expensive, pricing is slowly going down as sizes increase. 120GB and 250GB SSDs have started to become more affordable.

While they are still pricier than normal hard drives, their advantages are quite obvious in terms of speed and power use. So an investment into this type of storage technology might be worth your while in the long run.

All Fixstars SSDs come with a 3-year warranty, and you can pre-order one starting today, but the unit will start shipping to customers by the end of July.
