Warming has announced that its hit dogfighting simulator World of Warplanes will be receiving a winter game mode titled Snowball.

The celebratory combat scenario will be available starting today, December 18, until January 15. Snowball includes a unique Holiday-themed battle arena, has several daily missions, new consumables, as well as custom aircraft. Yes, it's UFOs.

The Snowball mode will enable gamers to engage in standard Team Deathmatch encounters on the Lapland map, exclusively available for the duration of the event. The only aircraft available is a flying saucer, the Odin 42M UFO, firing deadly snowballs instead of boring missiles.

The aircraft is available for free to all registered players, with 100 percent trained crew and its own hangar slot.

Additionally, special consumables will be available to those who accomplish specific combat missions, in the form of Fireworks, Sparklers and Smoke Flares. There are 26 dedicated missions to complete over the holiday season, along with eight brand-new achievements to collect.

Furthermore, the special event will challenge players to complete the Happy New Year! mission, which will reward them with a brand new and shiny Dornier Do 17Z-7 Kauz warplane.

The special winter event was introduced in patch version 1.63, in order to offer players the chance to properly celebrate the holidays. Version 1.7 is still in the works, and will be released at a later date.

The update also introduces a ton of bug fixes and tweaks, matchmaking optimizations, new decals, as well as a new US aircraft.

I'm not a pilot, but I play one in real life

World of Warplanes is the company's second military combat simulator, following the massive success of World Of Tanks, the vehicle combat massively multiplayer online sensation. Wargaming is currently also working on World of Warships, the maritime equivalent of its other two titles.

All three games are being developed with an eye on historical accuracy, with the team using actual historical resources to faithfully recreate the scenarios and technical abilities of the tanks, airplanes and warships.

The titles allow for numerous strategic opportunities, such as sudden strikes from cover, flanking and bold, direct head-on charges. For the time being, World of Warships is in closed beta testing, with no prospective release date.

World of Warplanes is currently available as a free-to-play title on Windows PC. The game offers a large-scale flight combat experience, with over 100 different vehicles to choose from, ranging from World War II era aircraft to more advanced jet fighters.
