World of Warcraft, the world's most popular massively multiplayer online role playing game, has reached a new milestone in terms of subscribers as it now boasts over 12 million players.

World of Warcraft is currently one of the most popular and most profitable games in the world, netting its developer, Blizzard, and its parent company, Activision Blizzard a huge amount of money thanks to the monthly subscriptions its players gladly pay to experience it.

Now, after a bit of straight line in terms of users, Blizzard has announced that the subscriber count for its MMORPG has surpassed 12 million players worldwide, right before the game's third expansion, Cataclysm, has received a concrete release date on December 7.

“The support and enthusiasm that gamers across the world continue to show for World of Warcraft reaffirms our belief that it offers one of the best entertainment values available today,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.

“We are as committed as ever to taking the game to new heights, and we look forward to demonstrating that with Cataclysm in December.”

World of Warcraft was launched in late 2004, and since then it has become a worldwide phenomenon and captured the hearts of many gamers all around the globe.

It broke sales records both in 2005 and 2006, and was overtaken by its first expansion, the Burning Crusade in 2007, and by its second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, in 2008.

Now, the game is getting ready for yet another massive update in the form of Cataclysm, which will add new races, characters and completely change the virtual realm of Azeroth for the players that choose to purchase it.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will be launched on December 7, costing 40 dollars for the regular edition, and 80 dollars for a special Collector's Edition.

It will no doubt further increase the subscriber count for the online multiplayer PC game.
