Greg Street, the leading systems designer working on World of Warcraft, says that the Blizzard team is eliminating flying from the upcoming patch 5.2 The Thunder King in order to introduce some elements of surprise and danger to the world of the MMO.

He tells IGN that, “Somewhere along the way, we’d lost the sense that being outdoors in the world was kind of a dangerous thing.”

Fighting groups of enemies in the world is the core experience linked to World of Warcraft and flying mounts allowed players to avoid most of them in order to just focus on high level raids and Player versus Player engagements.

The Thunder Kings is designed to appeal to old fans of World of Warcraft who have abandoned the Blizzard MMO because it no longer offered a challenge.
