World of Warcraft Invaded by Zombies

More than one MMO specialized sites are reporting that World of Warcraft is being assaulted by zombies. The event seems to be a part of the pre-launch period, which began with the 3.02 patch and that will continue until Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion to the Blizzard-made MMO, will finally arrive to the cheers of players worldwide.

The threat was first noticed when crates began appearing in Booty Bay. They were covered in strange runes and anyone who dared open them would become a zombie. This means that regular abilities are inaccessible, regardless of characters’ class or level, and that new zombie abilities are added. Zombies have about ten minutes to be healed back to normality, after which the transformation is pretty much complete, and players will infect everyone else who comes in contact with them. Argent Dawn agents are positioned in all capital cities and in other locations, trying to contain the disease while saying “The plagued tendrils of the Lich King lurk close.”

Attacking zombies are now ready to strike at all major city hubs, and there are even NPCs that have been turned. Players are apparently playing along, with the chat channels inundated with cries of “Brain!” as the disease spreads through the MMO game world. The good news is that no permanent damage is applied to a character that has been turned, and death makes the character appear as himself again.

The event will likely go on for some time, but observing the chatter on the Blizzard forums shows that the developers are saying this is a containable threat, even if most players are more than happy to play the zombie side and devise strategies to take out as many uninfected characters as possible. Blizzard is likely to also have other events ready, leading up to the launch of Wrath of the Lich King.

Though it may be a relief to most players when Lich King does come out, the trade channels are also full of people saying they are quitting WoW until they have Lich King. The zombies are continuously killing flight masters, quest givers, battle masters, auctioneers, and various other essential NPCs.

I see a zombie, I kill it. I'm a warlock, and so I don't have to come into contact to do so, luckily. I've had them beg for me not to kill them, but I don't care. Any player that doesn't like being a zombie, I'm doing them a favor. Any player that enjoys it, is doing so with the intent to kill other players and NPCs - thus deserving to die anyway. ;)

The event was novel at first. "Yay, I'm a zombie with new abilities, I can play for a short time as one, and then when I am done, return to gameplay." But, as the event has continued, the time to cure oneself has gotten shorter and shorter, now down to less than one minute (and who knows if the time will continue to decrease).
Additionally, the previously manageable number of zombies has turned into level 70 throngs (70 being the highest current level available until the release of the Lich King expansion pack). Forums are packed with players, even level 70 players who have been playing for years, quitting the game since it has simply turned into a race to see if you can do the mundane daily chores of speaking with a trainer or using your bank before a zombie five times your level comes along, infects you, kills you, and forces you to run for sixty seconds back to your body so you can come back at half health to have it happen all over again. The supposed healers who are combating this Scourge are being slaughtered by the overwhelming numbers.
Blizzard took a very good and novel idea to promote their new expansion and wave of the game and have turned it into an omnipresent annoyance to every subscribing member.
I hope that something is done soon to return game play to a state of normalcy, lest they lose even one more player.
