World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has broken another sales record, this time for the fastest selling game for a period of a month, with the expansion selling a whooping 4.7 million copies in its first month.

World of Warcraft is currently one of the most popular full pledged games in the world (Facebook titles like CityVille not withstanding), with over 12 million paying subscribers around the world.

As you can imagine, the release of its third expansion, Cataclysm, prompted a lot of subscribers to purchase it in order to access new content and features.

After managing to sell 3.3 million copies in its first day, December 7, the month-long sales figures were revealed by Blizzard.

According to the company, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm sold a record-breaking 4.7 million copies in its first month.

"We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.

"We’ve been floored by the community's response so far, and we'd like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone."

Blizzard attributes the success of the game to the loyal user base of World of Warcraft, as well as to the fact that it was released almost simultaneously in countries all around the world, from the United States to Canada, Mexico, Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, South Korea, Taiwan or Hong Kong.

As further proof of World of Warcraft's popularity, its day-one sales record surpassed the previous one set by the game's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

Cataclysm brings two new playable races, the Worgen and the Goblins, raises the level cap to 85, as well as implements massive changes to the geography of the game's virtual world and to the core mechanics of the online title.
