Developer Wargaming has announced the debut of a time-limited campaign challenge for the Xbox 360 edition of World of Tanks, daring players to reach a daunting global tank destruction quota in order to unlock new maps for the game.

World of Tanks is a highly popular military engagement simulator that involves tanks and a lot of explosions, with even more explosions to come over the course of this year, as detailed in the latest Wargaming developer diary.

The developers are dedicated to bringing the physics simulation features of their engine to a whole new level, complete with fully destructible buildings, tracks and turrets, and an improved suspension system which will make tanks behave more realistically.

It's a highly competitive massively multiplayer online game that's enjoyed by people worldwide, and the best thing about it is that it's free to play.

It focuses on the early to mid-20th century armored fighting vehicles that forever changed warfare with their operational mobility and tactical offensive and defensive vehicles, offering intense player vs player battles and a wide array of tanks, tank destroyers and self-propelled guns, as well as several mission types, providing a varied gameplay experience.

The game's popularity has soared since its worldwide release in early 2011, and World Of Tanks evolved into an eSport at the World Cyber Games in 2012.

World of Tanks has just made its debut on Xbox Live Arcade on February 12, 2014, and the new global event is a way for players to get more involved in the action.

Now, the global Xbox 360 community has been challenged with the task to unlock three new maps, the campaign starting on March 18 and running until March 24.

Tankers will be able to unlock the following new battlegrounds:

Lakeville, a deeply strategic urban location where the careful use of cover offered by buildings and the element of surprise will be the key to your team's success, which will be unlocked when 10 million cumulative tanks are destroyed.

El Halluf, a desert based map that provides ample strategic ambush opportunities with many spots for careful players to snipe from, unlocked when 25 million cumulative tanks are destroyed.

Prokhorovka, a classic battle arena that comes from the PC version of World of Tanks and that combines both open space confrontation and an urban setting in order to provide an extremely balanced map that is incredibly popular with eSports players, unlocked when 40 million cumulative tanks are destroyed.
