The hostilities will take place on a special 8-bit arena

Wargaming has announced some special things planned for its massively multiplayer online video game World of Tanks, in the form of Winter Showdown, a pretty unconventional game mode that will become available to players later this month.

The developer started things off the regular way, with some snow to match the current season and some tanks to match the theme of the game, only with a twist: all the action gets a healthy dose of 8-bit styling.

Players who enjoyed the April Fools' offering will no doubt get an instantly familiar feeling from this. The trailer looks like somebody made World Of Tanks in Minecraft, and the accompanying video shows off some of the features of the game mode, including destructible terrain. However, the unique visuals aren't the only thing that Winter Showdown is bringing to the table.

Gamers will be able to enjoy the mode with mega platoons, supporting five players each instead of three, and things will really escalate with two-on-two mega platoon battles, and with 10-versus-10 random battles.

Even more good things

In addition to the new game mode, Wargaming is also adding three brand new, custom-built tanks to the extensive list of vehicles players can choose from, in the form of the Mammoth heavy tank, the Polar Bear tank destroyer, and the Arctic Fox light tank, each tailored to accommodate a different play style.

Furthermore, to make things even better, players will also be able to heal their allies by shooting them with special ammunition, when engaging in the old-school style multiplayer arena.

Winter Showdown will be available in-game starting January 26 worldwide, and a little earlier, on January 15, in Korea.
