The genre has a set of rules that's different from that of mainstream gaming

World of Tanks currently has more than 20 million registered users and World of Warplanes is in closed beta stage but the developer behind both titles, Wargaming, says that there are aspects of the free-to-play model that still elude the company.

Victor Kislyi, who is the chief executive officer at Wargaming, has told Games Industry that, “Free-to-play is still the wild west. Nobody knows and nobody can predict where it will evolve to, where it will branch out to. I can see a single player experience being done on a server, like Gaikai or OnLive.”

He added, “At Wargaming, we don’t know free-to-play, we’ve just conquered this player versus player niche, we’re responsible for that.”

Despite not understating free-to-play, Wargaming manages to make money from its titles and says that any company who plans on doing the same needs to create a solid global network in order to compete in the genre.
