Time for some multiplayer

The United States branch of Activision is announcing that players of Call of Duty: World at War will be getting double experience this weekend. This is probably an attempt to make sure that those gamers who play for eight or more hours a day don't end up dominating the game. It's expected that the servers will be quite full, as players will jump at the offer from Activision.

The announcement also says that players will get a chance to try out two new playlists, which are available for both the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony. Team Tactical is a four versus four modes that will pit the two teams against each other in a random rotation of all the game types based on team mechanics. The other new playlist available is Mercenary TDM.

Call of Duty: World at War has been developed by Treyarch, using the engine that also powered Modern Warfare, and was published by Activision. Even though the World War II setting is a bit repetitive, the game matches so far the success of the previous release in the series, while proving to be extremely popular in multiplayer, where it keeps most of the mechanics introduced by Modern Warfare, like power ups that include attack dogs and artillery strikes.

Given the level of online play that the game sees, it's pretty much just a matter of time until Treyarch announces the release of a new map pack. After all, players need to be kept interested and map packs, together with special events, like the double XP weekend, are very important to the longevity of the title.

Meanwhile, it’s almost certain that Infinity Ward is now working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with analysts expecting to see the game released this year.
