“The oceans are integral to all of humanity,” UN Secretary-General Says

This June 8 marks World Oceans Day. This celebration has been around since 2009, and greenheads see it as the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about how important it is that we look after our oceans.

“On June 8, 2013, communities around the globe will celebrate World Oceans Day as an opportunity to learn more about our ocean and take action to help conserve it,” The Ocean Project explains.

Here's what the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has to say about World Oceans Day and the importance of safeguarding oceans and seas:

“From trade to food to climate regulation, the oceans are integral to all of humanity. This is particularly so for coastal dwellers whose income and culture are irrevocably bound to the sea.”

“If we are to fully benefit from the oceans, we must reverse the degradation of the marine environment due to pollution, overexploitation and acidification.”

Otherwise put, we'd better protect our oceans unless we want to come face to face with an economical and a cultural collapse.

“Let us work together to create new waves of action for ocean sustainability – for people and the planet,” Ban Ki-moon asks.

As pointed out on the website for World Oceans Day, oceans do more than just serve as a home for thousands of plants and animal species.

They generate oxygen, they regulate climate, they feed us, they clean the water we drink and they inspire us.

There are many things you can do to celebrate this year's World Oceans Day: think about how important oceans are to us and urge others to do the same or take some time to learn something new about these natural ecosystems.

You can also think about what you can do to help protect oceans, and organize or take part in some green-oriented activity.

“World Oceans Day is being celebrated by millions of people all over the globe. Be a part of the movement to protect our oceans!” OneWorldOneOcean urges.
