As the World Cup’s stage matches have reached an end, both Facebook and Twitter have released statistics to help us get a glimpse of the phenomenon’s impact on social media.

Facebook’s data team has revealed that between June 12 and June 26, the World Cup was quite a popular topic on the world’s biggest social network. Over 200 million people shared opinions about the matches, having over 815 million interactions, which includes individual posts, comments and even likes.

According to the same team, the most talked about goal was when Javier “Chicharito” Hernández scored the third goal against Croatia, making Mexico’s win a certainty.

Brazilian player Neymar caught the attention of football lovers across the social network, taking over the next four spots with various feats at the World Cup, including his first goal in the competition, the two goals he scored against Cameroon and the penalty kick that gave Brazil the lead over Croatia.

The network revealed that the Brazil vs. Croatia was the most talked about match on the platform, followed by Germany vs. Portugal and Cameroon vs. Brazil.

The above data is that much more relevant when we find out that users from Brazil have been the most excited about the group stage matches, followed by users in the United States and the United Kingdom. Indonesia, India, Mexico, France, Venezuela, Argentina and Germany wrap up the top ten.

Similarly, the most popular player according to Facebook’s data is the 22-year-old Neymar, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi and the football player who likes to bite his opponents, Luis Suárez.

Over on Twitter, the World Cup has also been quite popular. Over 300 million tweets have been posted related to the event since the group play began, including messages about various goals, match predictions or various controversies. By comparison, during the 16 days of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, fans only tweeted about 150 million messages.

The company has revealed that here too, the Brazil vs. Croatia match was the most popular, attracting over 12.2 million tweets, followed by the Brazil vs. Mexico one with 8.95 million tweets.

The most discussed moment of the opening match between Brazil and Croatia on June 12 was obviously Marcelo scoring his team’s own goal.

Unlike Facebook, however, on Twitter, Messi was the most popular player, followed by Neymar and Luis Suárez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Oscar.

The most popular message issued during this period came from Mario Balotelli, who said he wanted a kiss from Queen Elisabeth II if they managed to beat Costa Rica, which managed to attract nearly 177,000 retweets and over 90,000 favorites.
