Google is taking the World Cup seriously. After introducing several tools in its search engine, the company has also implemented a special area for those who are just as interested in the online trends revolving around the football event.

The company promises a “unique glimpse into what the world wants to know during the tournament.”

According to Google, there have been over 117 million searches related to the sporting event, even though the World Cup is only set to start tomorrow.

As for the upcoming matches, Google’s data shows that users in Spain are more interested in looking for Curitiba, the team’s World Cup base, than for top summer destination Ibiza.

Also, in the Netherlands, famous football player Arjen Robben has already attracted three times as many searches on Google than all other players in the Spain and Netherlands teams combined. While he has already received over 50,000 searches, Spain’s most searched for athlete, Sergio Ramos, barely got 5,000, tying with Casillas and Diego Costa.

Clicking on any of the upcoming matches will reveal even more data. For instance, related to the match in which Spain and the Netherlands will face off, users in both countries are confident in their chances to win, as Google+ data shows. While more than half of Spanish users display a neutral feeling towards the match, those from the Netherlands are a bit more on the negative side.

The world is also more focused on the Spanish team, Google reveals, after looking at the combined volume of searches for the two nations.

Google also shares what people in each country are more interested in regarding the World Cup, as well as the people they’re more curious about.

The tool is quite interesting, but there are a few bugs around. For instance, when looking at the Brazil vs Croatia match, and checking out the team members that people from these two countries have searched for the most, Neymar appears to be both the top searched for Brazilian football player and the second most searched for Croatian athlete.

Obviously, the fact that he also appears in Croatia’s team is a mistake, but hopefully Google will fix things up before the match.

Even so, the tool is quite handy for those who really love football and want more insight into this year’s World Cup, such as only a search analytics tool can offer. Since Google is by far the most used search engine in the world, it stands to reason that its data is the most useful, even if it doesn’t cover the discussions had on social media and so on.
