Bright and early this morning, celebrities such as Paul McCartney, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford and many others teamed up with Greenpeace members in order to launch a new environmental campaign: “Save the Arctic.”

Actor John Hurt even agreed to narrate a short video – “Vicious Circle” – explaining why this campaign is vital to the wellbeing of our natural world.

Their goal is to determine world leaders to create a legal sanctuary around the North Pole, which should prevent oil and gas companies from expanding their activities to this area.

Apparently, the main drive behind this campaign is Shell's plans to start drilling in this region of the world in just a few weeks.

The fact that the very companies that are responsible for global warming and the melting of the Arctic ice now intend to move on and destroy whatever is left standing of these polar ecosystems makes both Greenpeace members and the said celebrities angry.

According to Business Green, Kumi Naidoo, the executive director of Greenpeace International, told the press that “A ban on offshore oil drilling and unsustainable fishing would be a huge victory against the forces ranged against this precious region and the four million people who live there.”

He also added that “A sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the pole would in a stroke stop the polluters colonizing the top of the world without infringing on the rights of indigenous communities.”

Presently, Greenpeace invites all those willing to save this region of the globe to sign the Arctic Scroll, which is basically a petition asking world leaders not to allow oil or gas drilling in this area.

Once signed, the petition will be lowered by Greenpeace representatives four kilometers under the Arctic's icy waters, together with a Flag for the Future, thus marking the North Pole as a place meant for the youth of the future and strictly off limits for irresponsible energy companies.
