Samsung develops ultra-thin mobile display

It looks like Samsung's efforts throughout the last months to develop the world's slimmest LCD for mobile phones have finally brought them to a happy end.

They have already broken their own record and have announced the development of what is truly the world's slimmest mobile phone display so far. The new 0.82 mm display is available in 2 sizes, 2.1 and 2.2 inch and features a 240 x 320 pixel resolution (QVGA), 500:1 contrast ratio and 300nit brightness. To achieve the slimmer package size, Samsung redesigned the light guide plate subassembly and the glass substrate while the I-Lens technology, used for integrating the entire panel assembly, including a protective layer, into a single slimmer module, makes the display much more resistant to damage from vibration and shock. As - lately - many mobile phone producers have practically fought over who designs the slimmest phone, it seems that Samsung is making great progress in achieving the world's slimmest mobile phone, by developing the world's slimmest mobile LCD.

Mass production for the new displays is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2007.
