WordPress is the first Open Source app that lets you write posts, upload photos, and edit your WordPress blog from your iPhone or iPod Touch. The highly anticipated app is now available for free download through Apple's iTunes App Store.

"With support for both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress (2.5.1 or higher), users of all experience levels can get going in seconds," the makers say. "We've worked to make WordPress for iPhone a great experience for anyone who's familiar with the iPhone or using WordPress on the web. With future versions, we'll continue to incorporate the little touches from the web interface that make WordPress great."

The most distinguishable features we could spot were, of course, the included support for WordPress.com blogs and self-installed WordPress blogs (version 2.5.1 and higher), embedded Safari for true previews of posts, support for photos (camera and library), and the app's ability to protect a post with a password, as well as saving it as a draft, or mark it.

That's not all, though: WordPress offers full support for tags, categories and multiple blogs, and a useful auto-recovery feature which recovers posts interrupted by phone calls. Well, the latter is more of a necessity, rather than a plus.

The App works with WordPress.com and self-installed WordPress 2.51 or higher including the latest WordPress MU, the developing team says. The App works with the new iPhone 3G, the first generation iPhone, and the iPod Touch. Users should note that in the 1.0 release, to update the theme they will need to remove and add the blog back to the app's list of blogs.

Since WordPress is only just debuting, there are some known issues surrounding the app as well. Those include:

- Accented characters not encoded properly - Blogs with Twitter Tools plugin installed sending Twitter links to posts that don't exist - Display problems with toolbar for some iPod touch users - Unable to add a blog using a custom uploads location - Intermittent errors when adding blogs for some users - Some theme previews not available for public blogs.

Visit the App Store on your iPhone or iPod touch (software version 2.0 required) to download WordPress now.
