On August 6, a baby Rothchild's giraffe was born at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Caretakers say the calf measured about 5.5 feet (1.67 meters) in height at birth, but still has a long way to go until it matches its mother's impressive size.

The baby giraffe is a male. It was born to a Rothschild's giraffe named Olivia, Zoo Borns reports.

Olivia has never been a mother before, but appears to be doing a great job looking after its offspring.

Zoo keepers explain the family is presently being kept inside a barn.

The decision to place them in isolation was taken to ensure the mother giraffe and its calf wouldn't be bothered by visitors to the zoo or other members of their species while bonding with each other and nursing.

The animals will be closely monitored throughout the following weeks.

Once veterinarians and zoo staff decide they are healthy and able to cope with the stress of being under the spotlight, they will go on display.
