For decades, Wonder Woman wore the same clothes in all comic books – and very similar outfits in
all adaptations for the big or small screen. This is precisely why writer J. Michael Straczynski decided it was time for a change: and gave the popular heroine a pair of black leggings and a jacket over the red top, as the
Huffington Post can confirm.
Until just recently, Wonder Woman wore only a bright red top with golden touches and a pair of blue hotpants with white stars. Now, she’s fully dressed, with the black leggings and the jacket over the red top. The decision to give her another costume, though, had nothing to do with the amount of skin on display, regardless of what skeptics may whisper in corners of the blogosphere.
Be that as it may, the new costume still took many by surprise – and not few are those who say the old one was better. “Great Hera! Wonder Woman is getting an extreme makeover for her DC Comics 600th issue, the New York Times reports. She;ll be swapping her blue-and-white-star hot pants for leggings and adding a midnight blue jacket to the ensemble,” the Post writes. A photo of the new outfit (also attached to this article) has already started to circulate online.
Straczynski says the main idea behind the new costume was practicality. Wonder Woman is a modern woman who has to look good while also doing what she does best, namely being a superheroine. “She’s been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941. If you’re going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility,” Straczynski says.
As per the Post, Wonder Woman’s new costume was designed with the help of artist Jim Lee. So far, fans are not really that happy about the change – and they’re making no secret of it on dedicated forums. Do compare the before and after costume and make up your own mind.
