It’s not unusual for a woman to want to do something for herself after a bad breakup. Be it going shopping or getting a pedicure, a woman needs, and should get some time on her own after splitting from her man – even psychologists know this and recommend it. Garnier Nutrisse now reveals in a new study that this is not all that women do, since they also change hair colors in stressful moments.

The recent survey shows that one in five women have changed hair colors in the aftermath of a life-altering event, with breaking up from a boyfriend being at the top of the list. Also, this is not just a subtle change we’re talking about, as many women have admitted to going from one extreme to another, meaning, from blonde to black, and the other way around. The explanation for this can be many-fold but, most of the times, it simply represents a woman’s attempt to get back at her ex.

This is precisely why stylists are warning us to not give in to frustration and emotions, and stop and reconsider any move we want to make before it’s not too late. Other than changing hair colors, women also get what is known as a “post breakup haircut,” which puts them at risk of being doubly miserable if things don’t turn out as they want them to.

So, instead of heading for the salon with tears still running down our cheeks, stylists say, it’s best if we could just think if this is really what we want and, what’s more important, which is the motivation for our sudden decision. If it’s something that we’re doing to annoy the ex, whom we hope we will stumble upon in the street, we might as well come to a more peaceful decision and not take it all out on our hair. If, however, this is a change meant to mark the “out with the old, in with the new” phase then, yes, we should go for it.

Nevertheless, stylists do warn that, as with all changes, if we want to be spared the unpleasant surprises, we should take things one step at a time. In this sense, highlights and just a trim should do the trick: it will mean that we did, indeed, do something to our hair, while also guaranteeing we don’t go to impossible lengths just to end up looking ridiculous.
