In what might be today's wackiest piece of news – rest assured, an even wackier one will surely make headlines soon enough – word has it that a woman in Indonesia gave birth to a lizard.

More precisely, the women, together with the midwife who helped her deliver her offspring, claims that, while she was lying on the birthing table, what came out of her womb was not a child, but a baby gecko.

According to Metro, the supposed lizard mother's name is Debi Nubatonis. Prior to her allegedly giving birth to the baby gecko, Debi reportedly looked and acted very much like a pregnant woman.

However, when the time came for her to actually have her baby, Debi had one very big surprise, as did the woman who was assisting her. Thus, what emerged from her womb was a lizard covered in blood and mucus.

Mirror tells us that this miraculous birth occurred earlier this year, in May, in the village called Oenunto. Not at all surprisingly, it appears that locals are now very much afraid of Debi Nubatonis.

Thus, many are now convinced that the woman and maybe even other members of her family are practicing witchcraft. Hence, Debi has several times been threatened by folks who aren't big fans of Harry Potter and his kind.

Authorities and doctors in Indonesian very much doubt that Debi Nubatonis has in fact given birth to a lizard. However, they have agreed to take this matter seriously and spend some time investigating this peculiar birth.

“It is clearly a nonsense to suggest that the woman gave birth to a lizard. There has never been a proven case of a living organism from one species giving birth to a different species, it just doesn't happen,” says Dr. Messe Ataupa.

One possible explanation for this alleged lizard birth – other than simply claiming that the entire affair is one big hoax – is that Debi experienced a phantom pregnancy and, therefore, manifested all the right symptoms of a mother-to-be without actually carrying a child inside her.

"We have spoken to locals who confirmed that the woman showed all the symptoms of pregnancy, and it does seem according to the midwife that she appeared to be going into labour,” Dr. Messe Ataupa explains.

“However we believe it was just a phantom pregnancy or pseudocyesis where there was never a child although the woman would have had many of the symptoms,” he adds.

As far as the lizard is concerned, changes are that the tiny creature simply jumped on the birthing table when nobody was looking, and, since there was no baby, Debi Nubatonis and the midwife helping her deliver her offspring jumped to the wrong conclusion.
