A fundraiser raffle has left a woman stunned when her prize box turned out to contain a lot more than she bargained for.

70-year-old Gloria Lee won an alarm clock at an event held to support Princess Margaret hospital in Canada.

When she noticed that the box had been opened, she looked inside and found CAD$10,000 ($9,500 / €7,200) in cash and a bar of gold.

A Scarborough had donated the box to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, but it was never opened.

"We don't get a chance to open every gift that comes in. This one looked sealed, we put it in the storeroom to be used for any number of the special events that we have in a year," foundation spokesperson Kevin Shea tells CBC.

Lee's husband had died of cancer so, when she noticed the valuables in the box, she gave back the contents to the center.
