When Lorna Fulton from Glasgow put on weight, she thought her dreams of becoming pregnant had come true, but pregnancy tests came back negative and a further medical check-up showed that she was actually carrying a five-stone (32-kg) ovarian cyst.

The 44-year-old woman and her husband Stewart were both desperate for children, but their dream of having a family crashed when doctors told them that they were unlikely to conceive naturally.

However, when the woman ballooned from size 24 to size 26, the couple thought they were having a miracle baby. Their hopes were smashed once again when they found out that Lorna's growing bulge was due to a huge cyst and she would have to undergo a hysterectomy.

When they were told their chances to conceive naturally were slim, Lorna decided to lose weight, hoping that a healthier body would help her fall pregnant. After months of dieting, she realized her efforts were in vain, as her belly kept growing.

“At 21st [133kg] I knew I had to do something about my weight to help my chances. So, I joined a diet class and started eating a healthier diet and within a few months I'd lost 2st [13kg],” she said, according to Daily Record.

Mrs. Fulton details that she went to buy a new dress to celebrate, but she was baffled to see that her size actually went up instead of decreasing. She went to see her general practitioner, who referred her to specialists. After CT scans and ultrasounds, they discovered she was carrying a huge and deadly ovarian cyst.

Disappointed and heartbroken, the woman had to have a full hysterectomy at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Medics drained more than 32 liters of fluid from her abdomen, and she lost 5 stones (31.7kg) in weight during the operation.

Ovarian cysts are usually harmless and disappear without any type of treatment, but Lorna's case was different, as her tumor had to be surgically removed, although it was not cancerous.

“The doctors said it was too risky to remove it whole so it had to be drained. Plus there was a chance it could come back in my other ovary so I finally consented to a full hysterectomy,” Mrs. Fulton explained.

The woman accepted the fact the she would never be able to have children, although this was her biggest dream.

“I went under the knife and said goodbye to having children once and for all,” she said.
