Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and from where fashion designer and model Kelly Lee Dekay is standing, it looks like a woman with a perfect hourglass figure. The 27-year-old New Yorker has been waist-training for 7 full years and can now boast a record 16-inch (40.6 cm) waist.

Considering that Kelly Lee is already on the curvy side, the contrast between her hips and breasts, on one hand, and her waistline, on the other, is enough to stop traffic. Which is pretty much what happens whenever she steps out, whether in full costume or not.

Speaking with Barcroft Media the other day (see the video available below, at the end of this post), Kelly Lee says that she grew up in total admiration of superheroes and villains, particularly Jessica Rabbit and Storm from the X-Men.

She got the inspiration for her figure from the former and the hair from the latter… but only after years of hard work, if you can call it that.

Waist-training implies wearing corsets for most of the day until the body becomes accustomed to it. The tighter the corsets, the smaller the waist becomes in real life, to the point where, once the corset removed, the waist remains small.

Women who take waist-training to the extreme, like Dekay here, have to abstain from doing anything even remotely challenging from a physical standpoint: this means no heavy lifting, limited motions, no going up and down the stairs, and obviously, limited food intake.

Dekay insists she’s healthy

One of the consequences that inevitably appear when such a small waist is achieved is that internal organs shift position and might even be rendered unable to function properly because of the long time they’re squeezed together.

Michele Kobke from Berlin, for instance, who has a much smaller waistline than Dekay does, has long ceased to breathe properly and can’t even eat solids anymore. She is also unable to stand (let alone move around) if she removes her corset, because her spine is weakened to the point where it can’t support her body’s weight.

Dekay insists that she’s not here yet – and she promises that she will never be. She doesn’t disclose her diet to the camera, but she says that she doesn’t drink soda or eat anything that can lead to bloating. She indulges in the occasional burger and calorific treat, but most of the time she strives to just eat healthy.

Dekay also claims that her organs are perfectly OK and that she’s getting regular checkups. Her doctor always sees her without her corset and not once did he warn her that she should stop wearing it, she promises. Plus, she’s quick to add, it’s not like she’s thinking of making her waist even smaller than it already is: this is where she stops.
