Lucy Luckayanco is the first woman in New York who decided to get a permanent twinkle in her eyes by inserting a piece of platinum jewelry in her optic membrane.

The woman got a 3.5 mm platinum heart shaped piece of jewelry inserted in the corner of her right eye to serve as a conversation starter. “It's going to be a conversation maker. I will be able to tell people. It will be unique. It will be sort of my unique factor,” the woman tells Fox.

The new surgical procedure called “Safe Sight Jewelry” was made at Park Avenue Laser Vision by doctor Emil Chynn. Even if it sounds scary, the doctor reassures customers that it is really safe because the platinum jewelry is really thin and it does not affect the sight or the optical membrane.

The procedure has been made several times before, in Europe and LA, but not in New York. To start the insertion of the jewelry, the doctor first numbs the area with some anesthetic and then makes a small incision for the piece of jewelry in the white part of the eye. The worst thing that could happen after this kind of procedure is a little local bleeding or a small infection that can be easily treated with antibiotics.

Dr. Chynn sees the Safe Sight Jewelry as “another way to advance the science of ophthalmology,” according to his interview with Fox. The eye jewelry was not approved by the FDA and the American Academy of Ophthalmology warns the tempted customers about the dangers that a foreign object can bring when inserted in the eye.

After the procedure, Lucy said she had no pain or problems with her new “bling” and that she absolutely loves her new accessory. “Fifty percent of my friends are like: ‘What is this? Why do you need it oh my god are you crazy?’ but fifty percent are like: ‘Oh my god, it's super cool!,’” the woman says.
