This past weekend, a woman in the US delivered her baby not in a state-of-the-art hospital, aided by a team of doctors and nurses, but on the side of a busy freeway. What's more, the only help she got was from her husband.

Media reports say that the incident occurred in the state of California on Saturday. By the looks of it, the woman gave birth in a black Chevy Tahoe parked on the side of the 91 Freeway. Both the mother and the child are in good health.

The birth took the entire family by surprise

The Orange County Register tells us that the woman, identified as 29-year-old Sandra Vilchez, has 3 other children, ages 6, 4, and 3. She says that she carried them all to term, and that their births had to be induced.

Hence, she did not think it a bad idea to go on a trip from Riverside County to Downey this past Saturday morning, despite the fact that her due date for her newest offspring was September 26.

While 29-year-old Sandra Vilchez was traveling to Downey to see her mother, her water broke. The woman thought that she had time to make it to a hospital, but eventually, her husband, 35-year-old Bolivar Vilchez, had to pull over and help deliver the child.

The man says that the baby girl, named Savannah, was born just as he was on the phone with an emergency dispatcher. Thus, it is understood that Sandra Vilchez delivered her baby just minutes before paramedics reached her and her family.

“I thought we had half an hour, but no, she decided to come by the time we hit Kraemer Boulevard. As we were passing Kraemer, her head popped out,” the 29-year-old mother of four commented on this experience in a recent interview with the press.

Some were quite spooked by this birth

At the time Sandra Vilchez delivered her baby, her 3 other children were in the car with her and her husband. Apparently, they were quite taken aback by the scene, and kept asking their parents whether young Savannah was the one making their mom scream.

Hence, father Bolivar Vilchez had to constantly reassure them that everything was just fine. How he managed to help his wife give birth, talk to the emergency dispatcher and look after his 3 other kids at the same time remains a mystery.

Still, there is one thing the 35-year-old is ready and willing to admit to: that he would not like to go through something like this ever again. “I was terrified,” the Marine Corps veteran confessed in a statement.
