A woman living in city of Ottawa in Canada barely escaped with her life after being attacked by a goose. The bird turned out to be capable of such savagery that, to recover from the incident, the woman had to be hospitalized.

According to CBC, the attack occurred earlier this month, on June 10. The woman says that, at the time she had the brutally close encounter with the vicious goose, she was cycling along the Trans Canada Trail.

Kerry Surman recollects that, while cycling, she noticed a group of adult geese and hatchlings crossing the path. She assumed that she could just pass by them and then be on her way but, unfortunately, things did not go as planned.

On the contrary, the woman says that, most likely because the sight of her riding her bicycle spooked them, one of the birds turned on her. Thus, the frightened bird separated from the rest of the group and jumped her.

“I thought, ‘If I just zip past I'll be fine.’ But I misjudged how fast I was going and the goose misjudged my intentions,” the unlucky woman commented on the incident during an interview with the press.

“What I remember is the goose giving me the evil eye and then the goose wrapping its wings around my head, and I can't see and I hear myself screaming,” Kerry Surman went on to detail her terrifying experience.

The good news is that a local pastor named Steve Wilkins chanced to find her, and immediately realized that she was in dire need of medical attention. Thus, the pastor called the emergency line, and soon enough an ambulance arrived at the scene.

Kerry Surman was rushed to a hospital, and remained there for five days, during which time doctors tended to her wounds. Apparently, the bird's attack left the woman with a broken cheekbone, a concussion, several face lacerations, and even some loose teeth.

The woman says that, all things considered, she would have probably sustained far worse injuries had it not been for the fact that she was wearing a helmet and cycling glasses. She admits that, following this attack, it will be a while until she goes cycling again.

Wildlife specialists say that, although they almost never attack humans, wild geese are fairly aggressive birds, and are capable of causing significant injuries if provoked or disturbed in any way. Hence, it is best that people keep their distance from them.
