You'd better make sure you return all your rented media in time because otherwise you could end up in jail.

A South Carolina woman has spent a night in “the big house” for failing to return a VHS of the movie "Monster in Law" she had rented nine years ago from a local rental store called Dalton Videos.

According to Digital Journal, Kayla Michelle Finley, 27, went to the police station to report a crime apparently related to harassment and stalking. While there, officials discovered that a warrant had been issued for the her arrest.

The woman, from Pickens County, South Carolina, had rented the movie starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda in 2005 when she was 19. Although it was a 72-hour-rental, she never returned it.

Dalton Videos is now out of service, but Pickens County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Creed Hashe says the business owner requested the arrest warrant on a charge of petty larceny after sending Finley several reminders to demand the return of the video cassette.

Authorities sent the young woman a certified warrant on September 12, 2005.

On the other hand, Kayla Finley affirms she moved out of that area around at the same date and that she never received the correspondence.

“I didn't rent a movie with the intent of keeping it, at the time I had to up and move out of state due to my husbands job and honestly forgot all about it just as I'm sure some of you haters have done. I'm no criminal, but pickens county sheriffs office sure made me feel like I was,” comments a woman who claims to be Kayla Finley on Fox Carolina's Facebook page.

Finley was released after paying the $2,000 (€1,459) personal recognizance bond issued by the judge.

She says she plans to fight the charge, accusing Pickens County officials of having nothing better to do.
