A 19-year-old woman from Waltham Abbey, Essex is now the object of outrage in the UK, after speaking to a tabloid on why she doesn’t want to stop binge drinking even though she’s five months pregnant, saying she doesn’t want to be considered “boring” by her friends. In an interview with Closer Magazine (story via the
Daily Mail), Holly Piggott says doesn’t necessarily see it as a bad thing that she’s binge drinking because, if she stops, she risks being considered “boring” by her mates.
She has more than double the weekly units of alcohol recommended to a woman who is not carrying a child, but Holly doesn’t plan on stopping soon: she will continue to go out and party until she begins to show and needs maternity clothes, she says.
Every Saturday and Sunday, she’ll be at the club. She also goes to the pub three times a week and drinks at home every night at least a beer and a glass of wine.
“I’m not an idiot, I know I might be
doing my baby harm,” she tells the magazine, defending her irresponsible actions.
Even so, she doesn’t want to change her life completely just because she’s carrying a child, she goes on to say.
“I’m young and I don’t feel ready to stop my life. I’m trying to get the most out of it while I can. When I don’t fit into my size 12 dresses, I’ll stop,” she says.
Holly also uses her pregnancy to hide her drinking from her boyfriend (the father of her child) and her mother, saying that, whenever she feels queasy in the morning after a wild night out, she blames it on morning sickness.
“If I throw up I can say it’s the baby. And when I go to the cafe for a fry-up I say it’s because I’m eating for two,” she says without remorse.
When Holly doesn’t go out, she drinks “only” an alcopop, a glass of wine and, if she’s in the mood, a beer. When she hits the clubs, her favorite “treats” include alcopops, cider, Jagerbombs and cider, she reveals.
