Although Magellan is best-known for manufacturing a wide range of GPS portable navigation devices (or PNDs), the company also provides certain specialized products aimed directly at professional users and designed especially for mobile mapping purposes. And that's exactly the case with the company's latest announcement, namely the MobileMapper CX, which provides enhanced mapping capabilities in a very portable and user-friendly device.

The device sports certain features that clearly differentiate it from all the similar devices available on the market. Thus, unlike other CIS models, the MobileMapper CX includes a cell phone-like keypad interface that permits not only the device's one-handed operation, but also seriously shortens the learning curve and makes field use a lot easier. Moreover, the mobile mapper comes packed with the user-friendly yet comprehensive Mobile Mapping application software from Magellan that features all the functions GIS users need most, including here GIS feature libraries for logging feature descriptions, support for logging point, line and area features, an offset function for logging hard to reach features, etc.

Moreover, the device provides wireless connectivity options, including here Bluetooth and WiFi, so mobile users can access the Internet easily or communicate with remote systems and networks, such as a collected data exchange. Moreover, this also allows customers to get DGPS corrections for enhanced accuracy. The MobileMapper CX also offers some pretty serious storage capabilities, as it features an extended memory of up to 4 GB via an SD card for storing large files, such as complex maps and GIS databases.

"The positive feedback we've receiving from our beta testers who have put MobileMapper CX to the test in real world conditions affirms our strategy to put quality GIS and survey tools in the hands of users who also want great value," said Francois Erceau, general manager of Magellan Professional. "We design GIS solutions that bring real efficiency, powerful performance, and convenience to the field. MobileMapper CX is a great example of the rich features and aggressive price range that only Magellan Professional can deliver to the market."

There's no info, at least for the time being, regarding just how expensive this thing is or when it will hit the market, but it will most certainly not come cheap (although it can't bee way too expensive, either, as the company has tagged it as a "low-cost" model, taking into consideration what it has in store for pro users.
