New ad highlights Redmond's new Windows efforts

A long time ago, Microsoft's co-founder Bill Gates wanted to bring a PC on every desk and he more or less managed to do that. Now, the new Microsoft, with Bill Gates back at the company, wants to do even more than that and aims to make Windows an important part of everyone's life.

In a new Windows commercial rolled out today, Microsoft talks about its efforts not only to build an operating system that would appeal to all types of users but also to make computing more personal in a way never seen before.

And since it's “personal,” Cortana is usually a key feature, and so are Kinect, Office, and all the other tools and apps that would in the end make Windows the best choice on PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

At least, that's what Microsoft hopes to happen when looking at Windows 10, but it remains to be seen if the new operating system has what it takes to help the company consolidate its leading position on the desktop and help gain ground on tablets and smartphones.

Windows will power everything

Back in January at its Windows 10 event in Redmond, Microsoft said that its new operating system is designed not only for PCs, tablets, and smartphones but all kinds of devices, no matter if they come with a smaller or larger screen.

Windows 10 is thus created to run on wearables, Perceptive Pixel displays, phones of various sizes, and basically all kinds of things that can be powered by an OS. The IoT is also a key industry for Microsoft, so yes, Windows 10 will also step into this new business too.

“Windows 10 will be built from the ground up embracing the things that make us human,” the ad rolled out today states. “It will power the tools that people use every day. Everything from PCs to ATMs, tablets to subways, phones to ultrasound machines. It will enhance the whole world.”

This isn't the first time we're hearing about such ambitious plans and there's no doubt that Microsoft has always had incredibly high expectations, but in the last few years, only a few things have actually managed to meet these expectations.

With Windows 10, Microsoft is ready to start a new adventure to conquer the world beyond the PC, so it will be really interesting to see how this one would go.
