The Witcher 2 was one of the most interesting releases of early 2011 and it seems that the team at CD Projekt RED working on the series is now ready to develop the ending of the game and create a third installment for the franchise and, possibly, a number of spin-offs.

Speaking to fan site The-Witcher.de Jan Bartkowicz, who is one of the developers working on the series, has said, “Consider this example, for comparison, films like Pirates of the Caribbean, where the first self-contained story, the later is unchangeable, but then you think, it should be a trilogy.”

He added, “So people have a problem then. The end of The Witcher 2 is the beginning of much larger events, while The Witcher rather a cliffhanger ending.”

At the moment CD Projekt RED is working on creating a Xbox 360 version for The Witcher 2, which will probably be launched in 2012 and will use a number of different game mechanics that are adapted for console players.

The developers have also said that they will deliver downloadable content for the PC version of their role playing game, exploring more aspects of the world and revealing more of Geralt's backstory.

A full blown expansion is also a possibility.

CD Projekt RED is also looking for a game designer that has a deep knowledge of the Witcher lore and for an engine programmer with experience working on the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft, which might mean that a third game is already in the initial stages of development.

The Witcher has managed to impress gamers with its interesting game world, which is unusually brutal and full of politics, and its sleek and engaging combat mechanics.

Much of the series success is linked to the main character, Geralt, who managed to be very different from the typical fantasy hero.
