Ok, you know USB but maybe you're not familiar with WUSB (Wireless Universal Serial bus). Well, hear hear. The first cable-free USB devices are already shipping. Several months after being announced, Y-E Data's YD-300 WUSB hub has finally hit the market in the big old Japan.

The 4 port hub (USB-A connector ?4 port) was dubbed Ultra-Wideband Wireless Hub (UWB) and it's not technically complaint with the "official USB". The technology promises wireless USB transfers between anything connected to the hub and a dongle that plugs into a PC over up to 10m. Is that enough for the typical Japanese geek? What if someone received a restraining order from its PC? 10 m doesn't sound good, but maybe they'll stretch the invisible string further. 100 m should probably satisfy even PC-desk placed Bonzai trees. Don't jump to a conclusion yet, being the first to announce a new technology is pretty hard.

The device measures 96.2mm (D) ? 29.8mm (W) ? 9.4mm (H) and it can reach approximately 480 Mbps transfer speed between the PC and USB equipment (effective value). But that's only the case if the hub stays 3 m close to the PC. If you move the device further than the 3 meters barrier, the transfer speed will go down. Considering that it has about the same transfer speed like wired USB 2.0 connections, the only plus must be the fact that it comes with no cables. If you're that eager to try this new tech, you'd better split to Japan with 350 $ in your pockets (39,800 ?).
