Unfortunately, the price is a bit steep at $50 / €39

The Motorola Moto 360 is probably known to you by now, especially if you like to learn all you can about wearable technology. That said, you might like to hear about a new charger that exists for it.

It so happens that a wireless charger for the device has been added to the Google Play store, suspiciously close (time-wise) to the release of the new Android Wear update (Android 4.4W.2).

Google is obviously banking on the update to help bring the new device to the attention of the populace, no matter how unnecessary the recharger ultimately is.

The Motorola Moto 360 uses wireless charging

Not that it means anything as extraordinary as you might think. It's not like the watch can tap into normal radio or Wi-Fi and charge off that.

It still needs to use a specific dock. But that's just it: the watch has a charging dock included in the product package, so you really don't need a standalone one.

Especially when there isn't much evidence of the new one being any faster at restoring the power of the battery, since magnetic induction is still magnetic induction at the end of the day.

By comparison, the dock now selling through Google Play only comes with a USB power cable of its own, but not much else besides the standard papers. So basically there isn't much reason to get it if your original dock is still working fine, which it should be.

Pricing

It's not a pleasant topic really. The new charger has a tag of $39.99 / €39.99 but could reach $50 / €50 after tallying taxes and shipping costs. Not exactly a shining endorsement, alas.

At least the delivery won't take more than 1-2 days, unless you live in an area particularly far removed from any and all Google warehouses.

The Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch

This is a device that made a splash thanks to having a round display. Wireless charging was another asset, but there are some other things worth mentioning, like the ambient light sensor and associated brightness control (automatic), plus the changeable watch faces.

We've been following the story of the Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch closely for months now. As far as episodes go, this one was of the stranger variety. Then again, selling spare chargers is done for pretty much every sort of phone, so why not do it for watches now? Owners are a lot more careful with their phones after all, but the charger can get lost easily.
