This week is "crack-heads go sober" week. First Doherty walks away without any extra jail time (for now, anyway) and now one of the world's favorite drugged out singers, Amy Winehouse, makes a promise we all hope she can keep. The troubled "Rehab" singer has vowed to stay sober on stage for her European tour. Well, I'll be definitely keeping my fingers crossed for her and hope that she manages to pull through without any more drunken binges, almost lethal overdoses or possession arrests.
Amy was supposed to start her promotional touring earlier in the summer, but was forced to postpone her entire North America tour as well as cancel her European dates after she was hospitalized in August after a drug overdose that almost killed her. The singer pledged to keep off the booze before going on stage after the run of shows got off to a disastrous start on the opening night. Yes, well there's nothing like a bad start to sober you up - and it's a good sign (I think?) that at least in the eleventh hour Amy has proved she's still got at least some sense.
Amy's disastrous run began in at last week's Berlin concert, when Amy forgot the lyrics to some of her songs and stumbled on stage. She was then arrested for possession of cannabis in Norway. A tour insider said: "This tour started pretty much as the last one ended. Berlin was a difficult time for everyone and we thought it was going to turn into another tour full of drunken and missed shows. But she has now said she will not drink before shows for the rest of the tour".
And it seems that Amy has already put her new decision into practice at least once. "She stuck to it in Amsterdam, amazingly, and gave her best show of the tour yet. Everyone just hopes she keeps it up" the insider also stated. Jan Willem Luyken, the organizer of Amy's Amsterdam show, confirmed the singer was alcohol-free. He told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "She wasn't drunk when she came in and she did not drink backstage. I don't think she was stoned either. People were joking about her sober performance. They said, 'Has the wine bar been closed today?' "
Closed bar or not, whatever works to keep Amy off the booze even temporarily is good stuff and should be kept up. I have no idea how a clean and sober Amy looks like - but it has to be better than the version we're dealing with now.
