Chris Roberts, the creators of the Wing Commander series, has announced that he is working on a new space combat simulation game called Star Citizen, which will be launched exclusively on the PC and aims to bring back to life the entire genre but with a multiplayer focus.

The game will use the same core concepts that powered the Wing Commander series, allowing players to explore and do battle in a complex universe with diverse factions and characters.

The game will need to be purchased as a retail package before it can be played and will not require a monthly subscription after that.

Customization options for ships will be offered for in-game cash via an official store.

Star Citizen has been in development at Cloud Imperium Games, the new studio created by Chris Roberts, for about one year and the first playable version will be sent to backers in 2013, with the official commercial launch taking place probably during 2014.

The developers are using a crowdfunding system to get the resources they need to create the game, which is conducted via the official website of Star Citizen.

Roberts stated, “In recent years, game designers have stopped innovating and pushing the boundaries of what you can do in this genre. I plan on bringing that kind of development mentality back into PC gaming and space sims in particular.”

He added, “There is a lot of noise out there regarding social and mobile games right now, and I think PC gamers are feeling a little left out of the mix. But the PC is still incredibly capable of presenting an experience that doesn’t take a back seat to any other platform out there, including consoles. With my game, I want PC gamers to stand up, be counted and get excited again about all the great experiences their computer can deliver.”
