By 2015, more embedded devices will ship worldwide than the combined shipments of phones, PCs and servers, according to Microsoft, citing data from IDC.

The explosive growth of the Intelligent Systems market will be driven by the decreasing costs of microprocessors. With prices dropping and their power increasing, CPUs will be embedded into more and more objects.

“Sales of embedded microprocessor systems have steadily outpaced sales of PCs and mobile phones for years, and that gap is only expected to widen. IDC projects more than 8 billion embedded units will ship each year by 2014,” Microsoft revealed.

“The market for traditional embedded devices and intelligent systems is expected to become a $1.2 trillion industry by 2015.”

Microsoft already has a diversified collection of Windows Embedded offerings as users can see in the image at the top of this article, and indicates that Windows Azure, its Cloud platform, is perfect from centralizing data from disparate sources.
