Microsoft hopes everyone to dump XP and move to Windows 8

It's been a tough week for Windows XP, as tech giant Microsoft confirmed that it would retire the soon-to-be 12-year-old operating system in April 8, 2014, urging everyone to make the move to a newer platform.

New statistics provided by StatCounter for the first 10 days of this month confirm that users are finally giving up Windows XP in the favor of Windows 8, even though it's not yet clear how many people are actually willing to make the switch.

Windows XP currently has a market share of 21.62 percent, while Windows 7 continues to top the rankings with 54.76 percent. Windows 8, on the other hand, still trails behind Mac OS X and Windows Vista with a 4.45 percent share.

While this isn't impressive at all for a “reinvented” operating system that got to see daylight more than five months ago, it's a clear sign that Microsoft's efforts to promote Windows 8 might be paying off very soon, especially because the company is making the final adjustments to Windows 8.1, the first major overhaul of its current Windows contraption.
