You said it loud and clear: Windows XP Second Edition must exist

A few weeks ago, we came across an interesting proposal for Microsoft that was supposed to give those still running Windows XP a chance to stay completely secure after end of support arrives, without worrying that they could get hacked overnight.

Windows XP Second Edition, as it was called on Microsoft’s forums, was said to be a revamped version of the original Windows XP that would come with enhanced security features, more options, the same familiar look as the core operating system, but also with state-of-the-art performance and stability.

Chances are that Microsoft will never launch such an update for Windows XP, so we’ve asked you, our readers, whether a Windows XP Second Edition would indeed be a good idea or not.

The feedback we’ve received is mostly in the favor of XPSE, with the majority of users calling for the software giant not only to bring such a product to the market, but also to tweak it according to their needs. Keep XP on the market is clearly not an option right now, so launching a second edition could be a way to give everyone a little bit more time to upgrade to a newer platform, many readers said.

We’ve picked a few of the several hundred comments, but feel free to post your own thoughts to this story using the box after the jump. If it makes any difference, Windows XP will be discontinued in just 5 days, so those still running it have only a few days left to upgrade.

“Yes, still using XP and love it. No, won't upgrade. It's easy to use, familiar, and most all of my current software runs on it. Won't on the later versions, and updates not even available on several that I use. Yes, if a Second Edition XP was available, would probably buy it so long as my apps would still run on it!” – Joan4aday

“I would buy a 2nd edition of Windows XP gladly. Windows XP is only "outdated" because the MS dev team felt they had to push Vista, 7 and 9 down the throats of many people and then by not allowing it to be compatible with the newer Direct X stuff and fixing some of the multi core issues. Anyway with a brain knows you don’t have to re-write a whole o/s to do the things we do today.” – Apluscertified

“Yes I think Microsoft should come out with a new Windows XP Second Edition and also a Windows 7 Second Edition. I have Windows 8 and really can't get used to it.” – Ron

“If XP 2nd Edition does become a reality, I might consider it if the support out-lives 7. One thing I can vouch for on 7 over XP is stability. My wife's decade old PC was literally DYING while running XP, I just put 7 x86 on it and it has a whole new lease on life, it's like a brand new PC...for now.” – Creeping_Net

“Personally I think they NEED to relaunch Win XP because I have finally went to Win 7 and it is slower than Win XP and I’m running with updated mobo, CPU, everything and it seems like it’s slower, so yes they need to relaunch this.” – kinian

“I still use Windows XP and would gladly purchase a 2'd addition. When you get old, the mind can't deal with the fast pace changes MS comes up with. I won't be purchasing the new system - guess my days of internet access are nearing an end!” – Ole 77

“Loved XP! Still have it on 2 pc s that can no longer run. Would LOVE a 2nd edition! Hate 7, learning to like 8.1 But LOVE & miss my XP! I think taking the looks & ease of use from XP and making it run safe & fast as 8.1 would be perfect!” – JT
