Microsoft’s aging OS loses almost no users even though it will be soon retired

Microsoft will soon retire Windows XP, but users don’t really seem to care about it, as only a few actually move to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Statistics provided by market researcher Net Applications indicate that Windows XP now has a share of 31.41 percent, down from 33.66 percent in August 2013.

While the decline shows that Microsoft’s efforts might be more or less effective, most of the users who decided to abandon Windows XP most likely come from the enterprise industry, as many consumers have already expressed their intention to stick to the ancient platform many years from now.

Windows XP will officially go dark on April 8, 2014, so Microsoft will no longer release patches and security updates beyond this date. The problem is that with so many users sticking to XP, millions of computers are very likely become vulnerable to attacks overnight.
