Windows Vista, a Debut with Problems

Hardly had they been able to announce the new name for the operating system and the first beta version, when Microsoft saw it surrounded by other companies and virus writers.

The first problems were related to the name, Vista being a registered trademark of an American company, which is already studying the ways in which it can protect its investments. Truth is it doesn't happen everyday for the biggest software producer to dub its most
important project with a name that belongs to you, making you in this way very rich.

Although it took them some time before reacting, the non-profit associations which provide services to veteran hospitals in the US also said that they are discontent with Microsoft's decision, which already looks like a bad choice.

As if all these weren't enough, F-Secure has recently reported that the first viruses for the operating system have already appeared. I think that Microsoft has involuntarily succeeded to set a new record. The operating system hasn't been even born yet, but the viruses are already there, waiting.

The whole story is a little bit uncertain, since Microsoft said that the Danom viruses, which only target the MSH, won't even affect Windows Vista, because MSH won't be included in the standard version. Unfortunately, Microsoft's response came a little bit late.

Therefore, after keeping everybody waiting for an insanely long period of time, it seems that Windows Vista is having a difficult labor. Let's hope that at least the "baby" will be perfectly healthy.

"Vista" may be a registered trademark, but "Windows Vista" is not a registered trademark (yet.) I believe the complaints were nothing more than an attempt by the Vista company to gain unwarranted publicity and possibly money from Microsoft (to shut the Vista company, and sensational journalists, up.)

The viruses were not a major problem either. As mentioned, MSH will not be included with Windows Vista by default. It should also be pointed out that Windows Vista Beta 1 does not have some of the new security features enabled, such as Least-privilege User Access (that controls the privilege-escalation capabilities) and MSH will not be completed for several years to come. There is nothing particularly worrying about those exploits. We have yet to see what Windows Vista will deliver, security-wise, when it is released.
