Released and available for download

Microsoft announced that the launch and immediate availability for download of Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Windows Vista Ultimate, Enterprise, Business, Home Premium, Home Basic and Windows Server 2008. The Windows Mobile Device Center Team revealed that version 6.1 is designed to bring to the table key improvements and additional features focused on Windows Mobile 6 devices. With Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1, Microsoft is only delivering support for Vista, enabling users of Windows Mobile powered devices to benefit from the advances introduced to partnerships, content synchronization and file management.

"We had run into a couple of speed bumps on the final stretch drive, but the team switched into 5th gear and was still able to steer through these smoothly. The key updates delivered in this release include: IRM activation, HTML mail, certificate enrollment, file synchronization on all WM 6 devices (Yes, even Smartphone!), Windows Embedded CE 6.0 support, automatic device authentication, product registration and silent-mode install for corporate deployment," revealed Mel Sampat, Program Manager Windows Mobile.

Microsoft is offering a plethora of Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 variants for download on the Windows Mobile Device Center website, but users can grab the 64-bit version here and the 32-bit version here. This version of Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 was announced for early June 2007, at the end of the previous month. Back then, Nick White, Microsoft Program Manager revealed that one aspect of support was associated with both touchscreen and non-touchscreen Windows Mobile 6 devices, as the company prepares for Apple's iPhone.

"Windows Mobile Device Center is the replacement for ActiveSync on Windows Vista, and enables Windows Mobile users to connect their device, quickly set up new partnerships, synchronize content including PIM and files, transfer music, pictures, and video, and manage their devices with Windows Vista. This new version contains key improvements and new features to support Windows Mobile 6 devices," Sampat added.
